Hello!
We have actually! We are currently scheduling our next BBC Sherlock screening, and have some ideas along that thought.
We’d love to have a Sherlock Convention someday - especially since we were all floored by the devotion and love of Sherlock Holmes outside of just the BBC verse, but this would have to be far off into the future. It is a wonderful idea, but the thing is - it takes months of planning, and thousands of dollars. You need to rent space, get permits, insurance, licensing if you are showing media, guests and staff. Take a moment and think about a con you go to - how soon in advance do they announce? What’s the schedule like? Take a moment and think about how many people and hours it takes.
We dream about this someday - but it would take dozens of people, months and months of time and thousands of dollars. For an example, one of our staff organizes a 1/2 day event at a hotel for her job- like at a Hilton (8 people in a room for the day and a lunch). Well, that’s roughly $1,000 in expenses. Another event for 100 in a few breakout rooms can cost up to $8,000. If this was an event where we got 100 people, it’d be $80 a person - that’s without showings scheduled (which might be plausible if you take out food costs - which can be $2,500 to start!)
See how quickly it stacks up? Another example - our BBC Sherlock Series licenses are roughly $1,400 for each time we have a screening alone!
Now, this doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen - but for us to get a 1 day event in NYC where we could gather, we could take a stab in the dark and say it’d cost $6,000-8,000 for a ‘high estimate’. We’d have to make a downpayment (hotels won’t just ‘reserve’ space), and find folks willing to pay $50-$100 a piece. We just don’t know how many people we can guarantee will buy tickets - and we’d be most likely be lacking another KEY component- SPONSORS - companies that will use your event for advertising and pay good money that you can use to run your event - think a Comic-con - Marvel throws money at San Diego Comic Con so they can have ads run on merchandies and panels to get people to see their movies, read their books, etc. Dealers have to pay for a table, etc.
Our staff also has other obligations - school, families, work, etc. We are proudly non-profit and plan on staying that way. We all volunteer our time and effort to do the small scale and larger scale one day meet-ups, but they do take time. A convention would require us to at least double our staff or get volunteers that would work with us, and we’d need to announce MONTHS in advance - given that we had the funds to make a downpayment.
Again, we love your idea, and we’re working on making our Series II screening EPIC as much as we can. We’d love to have a Sherlock Holmes convention someday, and we’re working on having more meet-ups and events that do bring different verses (were you at our ‘Study in Sherlock?’) together.
GOOD NEWS THOUGH - There ARE events that we attend, but don’t run that are along the lines you are thinking about.
The Baker Street Irregulars Weekend (each year in January - NYC)
Scintillation of Scions (this upcoming June 9 in Maryland!)
Thanks again for your awesome question.

From the fabulous Helene of SherlockFrance:
A lot of people were asking us on our Twitter if we were planning to do a “Sherlock” convention in France, so now I can answer you that we are planning to organise that convention in Paris next year…
In fact the BBC Sherlock France’s team wants to organise a great convention not only about the BBC’s series but about the whole work of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, with the colaboration of the Sherlock Holmes Society of France’s team (which will celebrate its 20 years at the convention). So yes, every Sherlock Holmes’ lovers are welcome!
Even if we are planning to do a french convention, we really want to invite some very special guests : The Undershaw Preservation Trust, the Sherlockology team, The Baker Street Babes, the Sherlock Holmes Society of London, and many more…
For now, it’s still a project as we are actually researching the perfect place in Paris where to do it, but be sure we are going to do our best to propose you debates, conferences, spectacles, projections, and so on… Of course, all the details about this convention will be post as soon as our project will become reality!
Feel free to spread the word about this project as many times as you want!
#Sherlock Conventions are awesome. Being invited to Paris? Doubly awesome. Stay tuned for this French & nearby Sherlockians!
If you RSVP’d, we have a document that tracks the email that you registered from. Thanks! Aubre The Mod Team SherlockNYC

We’re still working out the rules - so we’ll be posting those up later this week.

Save UndershawResponsible department: Department for Culture, Media and Sport
In this year of special Olympic and Royal patriotism, I believe that Arthur Conan Doyle’s house, Undershaw, should be purchased from it’s private owners, for a fair price, by the nation for the nation, and that funds be made available to Hindhead Council to develop Undershaw into a national Conan Doyle Museum.
Doyle built Undershaw, in Hindhead, Surrey, to share with his family and invalid wife Louise.
Today it is empty, in poor repair and in danger from property development. Undershaw is of unique architectural and cultural interest to this nation: There, Doyle wrote many of his best-known Sherlock Holmes stories, and many other works. From Undershaw he conducted many of his campaigns for just trial and the rights of the marginalised. Doyle was a staunch patriot. This is only for people in the United Kingdom, but please pass it along, reblog it, tell everyone you know. For more information please go to www.saveundershaw.com
